"We educate the whole child…in partnership with you".
The mission of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School is to provide, in partnership with parents, the environment, resources, structure and opportunities to educate children in the Catholic tradition by instilling in them the tenets of their faith, the need for charity and service, the importance of liturgy, prayer and sacraments, and the knowledge of their culture, history and technology in an environment of academic excellence in order to develop them as responsible, educated citizens and active members of the Catholic Church.
All that we have is a gift from God. He invites us to be generous with all our gifts and talents, even when it seems illogical or counter-intuitive. When we give away all that God has given us, He multiplies it and never abandons us.
REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR
32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The first reading and Gospel this Sunday feature two widows who have something in common. They both are asked to give from their poverty. In the first reading (1 Kings 17:10-16), the prophet Elijah goes to Zarephath and encounters a widow and her son. The poor widow only had a little flour left in her jar and was going to prepare the last meal for her son before they died. In this dire situation, Elijah asks her to make a cake for him! Can you imagine what she was thinking? In her great need, God asked her to give. She obeyed the Lord and she and her son were able to eat for a year.In the Gospel, the poor widow donated her two coins that were only worth a few cents. The rich people probably looked down upon her because they were giving much larger quantities, but she was giving from her “whole livelihood”.When we are in difficult situations, financial and otherwise, the Lord invites us to be generous. He invites us to do the opposite of what we would expect. If we are looking for love, we should give love. If we are looking for peace, we should give peace. God asks us to be generous when it doesn’t seem logical. As I was praying about widows being generous, the Virgin Mary came to mind. We believe that she was widowed before the crucifixion. Jesus was her only Son, and the Lord asked her to let go of her Son as He was crucified. Mary didn’t know what it all meant at the time, but she trusted God. Of course, her Son rose from the dead and opened the gates of heaven for all of humanity. All that we have is a gift from God. He invites us to be generous with all our gifts and talents, even when it seems illogical or counter-intuitive. When we give away all that God has given us, He multiplies it and never abandons us. What is the Lord inviting me to do with all that He has given me? Do I cling to what I have or am I generous?Do I see my children as gifts from God or as my own possessions?
Have a blessed week!
