The goal of the St. Isaac Jogues Athletic Program is to provide an environment that promotes physical development, knowledge of the sport and healthy competition while also remaining true to our high religious, moral and social standards. Participation in the SIJ Athletic Program is a privilege, not a right. Student athletes are expected to adhere to the policies set forth in the Parent Student Handbook as well as the guidelines outlined in this policy, or forfeit their right to participate.
All participants in the SIJ Athletic Program represent the school and parish at all times. SIJ athletes are expected to act in a manner that reflects favorably upon the school, parish and themselves. This expectation is not limited to the sports field or court, but should be evident at our school, at other schools as well as before, during and after athletic events.
Academic & Behavioral Standards
St. Isaac Jogues student-athletes must meet academic and behavioral standards in order to participate in any SIJ sport program. Starting mid-September parents will be notified if their child is ineligible to play sports.
Academic Eligibility - “No Pass—No Play”
Athletes are required to achieve and maintain a “C-” average in each subject with an effort grade of Satisfactory or above.
Students participating in athletics must maintain his/her academic eligibility on a weekly basis.
Teachers in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 will notify the Athletic Director of any student not meeting academic eligibility on a weekly basis.
The Athletic Director will notify via telephone the student’s parents and coaches of a student’s ineligibilty.
Any athlete who is ineligible for a total of four weeks (not necessarily consecutively) will be permanently removed from his/her team for the remainder of that season.
Behavioral Eligibility
A student-athlete’s behavior is governed by the same rules, regulations and standards that apply to all students as set forth in the St. Isaac Jogues Parent-Student Handbook and the Athletic guidelines.
Administration and staff have the discretion to remove or reinstate any student-athlete.
The Principal’s decision on athletic participation, policy and procedures will be final.
Attendance and Commitment
By joining an SIJ team, student athletes are committing to attend all practices and games. Once a student commits to an SIJ team, the SIJ team is expected to take precedence over any other team or co-curricular activity.
Parents and students should consider other time commitments (homework, plays, choir, band, golf, tennis, etc) before making a commitment to join a team. If a parent or student is unsure about the level of commitment expected for a particular sport, including the specific practice or game schedules, please contact the Athletic Department. The coach should be notified of any absence as soon as possible.
If a student is absent from school, he or she cannot attend a practice or game that same day. Illness and family emergencies are considered excused absences. All other absences are considered unexcused. Athletes with two unexcused absences are subject to suspension from the team. Athletes should arrive 20 minutes prior to game time and 10 minutes before their designated practice time.
Registration Requirements
Registration The Suburban Parochial League requires a firm commitment from its member schools on the number of teams they will submit for participation in the League by June 1 prior to the school year. As a result, all students interested in participating in the Athletic Program must submit their Registration Form and payable fees by the third Friday in May prior to the school year. With the exception of transfer cases, fees will not be refunded. In addition to the registration form, a signed parental consent form is also required.
Medical The Diocese of Joliet has mandated that all 5th-8th grade student athletes planning to participate in any SIJ sports program must have a current Physical Exam Form on file with the school office. No athlete will be allowed to attend try-outs, evaluations or practice without a current sports physical. (Physicals are valid for one calendar year) This is an annual requirement by both the Diocese of Joliet and the State of Illinois.
Playing Time
Only players on the team roster may participate in practices or games. In the 5th grade and at the “B” level, each player is to play a minimum of one quarter per game in basketball and one game in volleyball. At the “A” level, there is no minimum level of playing time, playing time is earned at practice and at the discretion of the coach. Coaches at the “A” level should, at a minimum, attempt to play non-starters at appropriate times in the regular season and whenever the outcome of the game is not in doubt.
These guidelines should be applied under normal circumstances. The coach always retains the right to reduce playing time as a result of unexcused absences or other disciplinary action. In the event that the primary goal of a student or parent is more balanced playing time, then one should notify the Athletic Director prior to tryouts so that child will be placed on one of the “B” teams.
Conduct
Athletes Athletes are expected to show good sportsmanship and play by the rules. Athletes are expected to show respect for coaches, referees, teammates and opponents. Loss of self-control, inappropriate gestures or tone of voice, foul or abusive language, arguments with referees, or other signs of disrespect are all reasons for disciplinary action. Potential disciplinary action includes reduced playing time, suspension or expulsion from the team.
Coaches Coaches should be familiar with all school and league rules and guidelines. Coaches should provide a good model of the Christian sportsmanship that we are trying to foster at SIJ by maintaining a healthy balance of good sportsmanship and fair play with the desire to win. Coaches should show respect for game officials, players and opposing coaches at all times. Coaches should refrain from public protest which may lead to similar behavior from players, parents or other spectators.
Parents Parents should be familiar with all school and league rules and guidelines. Parents should provide positive support and encouragement for the team. Publicly criticizing the coach, players, referees or any other game official is inappropriate behavior and may result in expulsion from the game or event.
Dress Code
Student athletes should be neatly dressed for all games. No jeans, sweatpants or pajamas. Athletes are NOT allowed to wear TEAM ISSUED UNIFORMS to or from games. Locker rooms are provided at all facilities.
Uniforms & Equipment
Athletes are responsible for all equipment and uniforms that have been issued. Any damage or loss will be replaced at the athlete’s expense.
Summary
This Statement is meant to provide general guidelines for all SIJ athletes, coaches and parents. Other league specific and/or diocese rules may also apply. Any questions regarding the application of these guidelines should be directed to the Athletic Director. In the event of a conflict between league or diocesan rules and these guidelines, the league or diocesan guidelines will control.
